Empowering Refugee Women Through Sewing Skills

A Collaborative Sewing Training with Humanity Connects

Introduction

At Black Models Uganda, we believe that every woman deserves the opportunity to build a dignified and independent life.

In partnership with Humanity Connects Charity Initiative Limited, we recently conducted a Sewing Skills Training Workshop aimed at empowering refugee women and girls with practical tools to shape their own futures.

This initiative is more than just training — it is a step toward restoring hope, confidence, and economic independence.

About the Workshop

The training took place at the premises of Humanity Connects Charity Initiative Limited in Makindye, creating a safe and welcoming environment for learning and growth.

The workshop focused on: Sewing skills development.

  • Sewing was intentionally chosen as a skill that is accessible, marketable, and capable of transforming lives— enabling participants to start small businesses, support their families, and contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Creativity as a More Than a Training, A Shared Experience

What made this workshop truly special was not only the skills taught, but the connections
built and voices heard.

The room was filled with stories of resilience, courage, and determination. Participants
openly shared:

  1. Their personal journeys
  2. The challenges they face in accessing livelihood opportunities
  3. Their dreams for a better, self-reliant future

In these moments, the training became a space of healing, encouragement, and collective strength.

Our Mission in Action

Our Mission in Action At Black Models Uganda, our mission is clear:

To build and advocate for a safe and inclusive marginalized refugee community empowered for economic growth and sustainability through livelihood support programs.

This workshop is a living reflection of that mission — where skills become opportunities, and opportunities become lasting change.

Looking Ahead

This training is only the beginning. Together with Humanity Connects Charity Initiative Limited, we are committed to:

  1. Expanding vocational training opportunities * Supporting small business development
  2. Providing access to micro-seed funding
  3. Strengthening pathways toward self-reliance

We envision a future where every woman we reach is equipped, confident, and economically empowered.

Conclusion

Empowerment begins a single opportunity — and often, that opportunity begins with a skill.

Through this sewing training, we witnessed more than learning; we witnessed hope being restored, confidence being rebuilt, and futures being reimagined.
