BMU SEWING PROGRAM

Program Overview

The BMU Fashion & Design Skilling Program is a four-month professional development course designed exclusively for registered Black Models members.

This program equips social change agents with practical fashion design and garment construction skills to enhance their personal brand, industry knowledge, and income potential.

The training focuses on hands-on learning, enabling social change agents to gain real experience in:

  • Basic tailoring and garment construction
  • Understanding fabrics and styling
  • Fashion creativity and customization
  • Personal branding and fashion business fundamentals

By the end of the program, participating agents will confidently understand how garments are designed, cut, sewn, and finished. They will also gain knowledge in fabric selection, fashion trends, branding, and marketing within the fashion industry.

This program combines technical skills, creativity, and entrepreneurship to empower social change agents beyond the runway preparing them for self-reliance, fashion entrepreneurship, and broader opportunities within the creative industry.

Eligibility

This program is exclusively available to: Black Models Uganda.

Only registered and active social change agents are eligible to participate.

Models attend hands-on Fashion & Design training every first Sunday of the week.

  • Head Office: Gayaza – Bulamu Muwanga Stage

Each session focuses on progressive skill-building, creativity development, and professional growth within the fashion industry.

Training Schedule

Week 1

Description

Trainees learn basic machine control, straight stitching, seam finishing, and handling fabric while producing a simple protective pron.

Focus on measurements, cutting, and joining garment piece. Trainees practice elastic waistbands, and simple garment assembly.

Certification

Upon successful completion of the four-month training program, participating agents will be awarded a Certificate of Completion from the Black Models Uganda Skilling Department.

To qualify for certification, models must:
  • Maintain consistent attendance during training sessions
  • Actively participate in practical work and class activities
  • The certificate recognizes the social change agents’ technical competence, creativity, discipline, and readiness to pursue opportunities in fashion design, styling, tailoring collaborations, and related fashion business ventures.

Rules and Regulations For Trainees

These rules and regulations are designed to ensure smooth training sessions, protect equipment, promote safety, and encourage mutual respect among trainees and instructors. All sewing trainees are expected to read, understand, and follow these guidelines throughout their training period.

Attendance & Punctuality
  1. All models must attend sessions regularly and arrive on time.
  2. Late arrival beyond 15 minutes without a valid reason may result in being marked absent.
  3. Models who miss more than three consecutive sessions without communication may be suspended from the program.
  4. Any absence should be communicated to the instructor in advance where possible.
  1. Models must present themselves neatly and professionally during training.
  2. Appropriate and comfortable attire for practical sessions is required.
  3. Closed shoes are recommended for safety during garment construction practice.
  1. All models must respect instructors, staff, and fellow models.
  2. Disruptive behavior, disrespect, or misconduct will not be tolerated.
  3. Professional conduct is expected at all times.
  1. All equipment and materials must be handled with care.
  2. Any intentional damage to tools or machines may result in disciplinary action.
  3. Models must follow instructor guidance when using equipment.
  1. Follow all safety instructions when handling sewing machines, scissors, needles, and other tools.
  2. Report any injury or equipment malfunction immediately.
  1. Models are required to complete all assigned practical exercises.
  2. Active participation is mandatory.
  3. Incomplete work without valid reasons may affect certification eligibility.
  4. Any additional materials required will be communicated in advance.
  1. Mobile phones must be on silent mode during sessions.
  2. Excessive phone use during training is prohibited.
  1. Models must maintain cleanliness of the training area.
  2. Workspaces must be left organized after every session.
  1. Evaluation will be based on attendance, participation, skill development, and discipline.
  2. Certification is awarded only upon full completion of the program requirements.

A model may be removed from the program due to:

  1. Repeated indiscipline
  2. Continued absenteeism
  3. Violation of program rules
  4. Misuse of equipment
